Michael Hurley

Michael Hurley's carefully crafted songs and hand-painted album covers have endeared him to a small but devoted group of musicians and critics. Now, more than 40 years into his career, Hurley is reaching a broader audience, including a younger generation of fans who are covering his songs, and releasing his new record, Ancestral Swamp, on Devendra Banhart's Gnomonsong label. In 1965 he recorded his first collection of songs for the small Folkways label in New York City. Like a troubadour of old, he has lived in Virginia, New York, Kentucky, Florida, California, Oregon, Ohio and Massachusetts, and has seldom remained in one location for an extended period of time. Although Hurley has never gained a large audience, critics, musicians, and loyal followers alike have sung his praises. In the mid-1970s Rolling Stone chose Have Moicy! (1976) as one of the year's best albums and, more recently, Cat Power recorded two Hurley songs, "Sweedeedee" and "Werewolf."

“A fine, unhurried contemplation of life, love, sin and death… by a man who’s seen most everything and never let it bother him.”
-PopMatters

“Blessed with a voice that makes Leon Redbone, JJ Cale and Ry Cooder all sound like a bunch of prissy stage-school elocutionists”
-BBC
